Blaine is considered to be one of the prominent advisers to the Indigo Plateau in Kanto. His wit and intelligence have allowed him to gain the ear of many people of authority in the world of training, raising, and battling pokemon. Some who work with him describe him, despite his penchant for fire pokemon, as having a rather cool and subdued personality, seeming distant and uncaring. Blaine is not known for his patience of the ignorant, however, and more than one trainer coming to him to gain the Volcano badge has been turned away frustrated, and confused.

Blaine is also the author of a pokemon encyclopedia, which until the advent of the pokedex, was considered the standard teaching tools in schools and universities. It is said that because of this, Blaine and Professor Oak are intense rivals. Blaine has a Masters Degree in Pokemon Psychology, a Masters in Genetics, and a Bachelors in Frontier Medicine, from Goldeen University in Celadon. He is a recipient of the Alakazam award for scholarly achievement for the publication of his now defunct encyclopedias.
